Best Time to Visit Central Asia

The same topography that makes this region spectacular—from perennial snow-capped peaks to boundless deserts—also creates its weather patterns. Temperatures in summer and winter can be extreme, so WT operates trips during spring and fall, from March to June and September to October. During these months, expect temperatures that average between the low 50s to high 70s. Still, be prepared for temperatures to vary according to topography and altitude.

March to April

Crisp mountain weather, villages bursting to life, and temperatures that range from low 40s to high 60s make spring an ideal time to visit much of Central Asia. We kick off spring with two rail journeys in the comfort of a private luxury train, the Golden Eagl e: the Caspian Odyssey and Republics of the Silk Road. WT travelers can take advantage of the cooler weather and lack of crowds while avoiding late-winter weather.

May to June

With clear skies and daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s, the mountains are ideal for experiencing the region’s nomadic lifestyle. May is when we kick off our hiking- and city-focused tours: expect lush wildflower-covered mountain passes across Kyrgyzstan’s Celestial Mountains, crisp days exploring bazaars and teahouses, and ideal temperatures for the occasional yurt stays beneath the stars. Summer is also when many cities host their annual sporting events and festivals.

July to August

Higher elevations reach their prime during these hot summer months, with certain mountain roads becoming passable once the snow melts. This is when we operate our Great Game journey, an overland tour from western China’s Xinjiang Province and northern Pakistan’s Hunza Valley to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

September to October

The same glorious weather the region sees in spring returns in the fall, with temperatures between the low 40s and high 60s. While spring presents landscapes of emerald-green, autumn’s colorful hues highlight the region’s landscapes of lakes and peaks. Fall also marks harvest season, which is reflected in busy villages and the bounteous display in farmers’ markets.

November to February

The region’s high-elevation plateaus and soaring mountain ranges make certain parts impassable with snowfall, which typically begins in early November. Though desert areas can be mild, many experience near-freezing temperatures. Because each of WT’s journeys cover such expansive topographies, we don’t operate during peak winter months.
