We recommend arriving a day early to allow time to recover from jet lag. We are happy to arrange hotel nights (an "on your own" expense).

We'll make both a sunset and sunrise pilgrimage to the Taj, “a poem in stone,” and at Fatehpur Sikri, we explore the sandstone palaces of an ancient Mughal city. In Jaipur, we'll discover the walled quarter, a showcase for Rajasthani craftsmanship. Our stay at Jaipur's Rambagh Palace gives us a taste of royal life.
Rajasthan's flamboyant camel and cattle fairs are a whirlwind of color, song, and dance. Families attend from far and wide, dressed in Rajasthani festival attire. Overnights are at a tented camp or hotel.
We roam Jodhpur's spice and textile markets, and at Mehrangarh Fort, experience the heritage of Rajasthan on a princely scale. We walk among 15th century Jain temples at Ranakpur and take a Jeep safari in search of leopards near the village of Narlai.
Udaipur captures India at its most quintessentially romantic, with its craggy green hills and bathing ghats clustered around idyllic Lake Pichola. We'll visit the city's grand palace, the largest royal complex in Rajasthan. Depart on Day 13 via Delhi.

      What the Trip is Like

This trip is Level 1+, Easy. It is a comfortable, vehicle-based sightseeing trip. There are some long days of driving on rough, bumpy roads. Please remember that travel in India can be an intense experience. The essential requirements are flexibility, a sense of humor, curiosity, enthusiasm about new peoples and places, and an openness to the unexpected.
      Review Trip Level Details
Like the rest of India, Rajasthan has four seasons. In winter (January to March), temperatures vary widely around the state of Rajasthan but this is an ideal season for travel. January is the coolest month of the year. April to June is pre-monsoon, the hottest season, particularly in May and June. June to September is the monsoon season, when 90% of the annual rains come. October to December, the post-monsoon season, is a very comfortable season for travel.

Accommodations include comfortable, modern hotels reflecting the traditional architecture of Rajasthan as well as former palaces and royal residences that have been converted into luxurious heritage hotels. At our tented camp at the Pushkar Fair, we sleep in Rajasthani-style air-conditioned tents furnished with cots and en suite facilities.

An optional early morning camel ride is offered at the Pushkar or Nagaur fair for an "above the crowd" view of the activities around the fairgrounds as the day begins. Anyone participating in this optional activity must acknowledge the inherent dangers in riding and agree to accept any and all risks.

      Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

      Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

      Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

      Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

      Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

Later in the day we make a sunset pilgrimage to the exquisite Taj Mahal, set on the banks of the Yamuna River. This white marble palace was constructed over a 21-year period from 1632 to 1653 by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth. It was described by the English poet Sir Edwin Arnold as “Not a piece of architecture, as other buildings are, but the proud passions of an emperor's love wrought in living stones.” Note: In order to be at the Pushkar/Nagaur fairs on the optimal days, your sunrise or sunset viewing of the Taj Mahal may take place at the Mehtab Bagh ("Moonlight Garden"), a beautiful viewpoint on the Yamuna River just opposite the Taj. The palaces and courtyards remain in pristine condition, offering us an extraordinarily accurate glimpse of a Mughal city. After lunch at the Bagh Resort, a 12-acre property with 200-year-old orchards and garden in the ancient town of Bharatpur, we head to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. Along the way we stop at the baori, a 17th century step-well that goes down nine levels into the ground with pillared hallways and verandas. Our unforgettable accommodation this evening and tomorrow is the Rambagh Palace Hotel, the former princely residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur, now a wonderful hotel managed by the prestigious Taj group. Set right in the heart of Jaipur, the palace is a beloved landmark full of original paintings, marble sculptures, and sparkling fountains. The small, sleepy town of Pushkar comes alive with brilliant color as hundreds of thousands of pilgrims arrive for a ritual cleansing of the soul in the waters of Pushkar Lake, a holy lake in the center of town surrounded by bathing ghats and whitewashed temples. This two-week-long religious gathering in turn attracts all kinds of trading opportunities for Rajasthani villagers. In the desert, the raising of animals is far more important than agriculture, and with livestock trading so central to the culture, Pushkar has developed into one of the largest camel, cattle, and horse markets in the world.

The atmosphere on the dunes outside Pushkar, where all the animals are kept, is a lively one, with families dressed in their festive best, chatting and trading. Even marriages may be arranged in this great annual meeting place. In Pushkar town itself, families gather at over 300 temples, singing religious chants, performing age-old Hindu rituals, and making wishes for their loved ones and ancestors by the lakeside. Nearby, the Pushkar Fairground is abuzz with activity, from tented bazaars to itinerant musicians to camel and horse owners proudly showing off prized animals adorned in hand-tooled leather saddles and beadwork.

We experience this spectacular fair with morning and evening walks amid the herder camps as the sound of temple bells drifts across the lake, on visits to the lakeside to watch Hindu priests perform pujas, and on camel rides through the fairgrounds, where singers and dancers celebrate around campfires. The Pushkar Fair is a dazzling experience of the vibrancy of India. It is also a coming together of traditional peoples to rejoice in the richness of their culture. Our Trip Leader will bring us deep into this world with his cultural insights and local connections. Royal Heritage Camp, our accommodation, is a comfortable tented camp with an excellent location for enjoying the fair. Please note that this property only serves vegetarian meals. each day
Approximate Driving Time: 3 hours on Day 5

February Departure (Nagaur Fair):
We stop at the town of Pushkar for lunch and a short visit en route to Nagaur, a picturesque Rajput township that comes alive with activity as thousands and thousands of colorful camels and young bulls (the renowned Nagauri breed), along with oxen and horses, are brought in for trade and sale at the Nagaur Cattle Fair. These prized animals are lavishly adorned and even their owners flaunt colorful turbans and long moustaches. We spend the day enjoying the festivities of the fair, the second largest in all Rajasthan, held annually for eight days between late January and February. Along with camel and cattle trading, there are also events like tug-of-war and bullock races to entertain the fairgoers. In the evenings, there are campfires and performances of Rajasthani folk music. The fair is a great celebration, a coming together of traditional peoples to reaffirm their identity and rejoice in the richness of their culture. One evening at sunset, we enjoy a camel ride through the fair, a wonderful experience of this uniquely Rajasthani event. It is truly an architectural marvel, actually a blend of 11 palaces, each built by successive maharajas during the 16th to 18th centuries. The crenellated walls of the City Palace are adorned with brilliant miniature paintings and decorative tiles and mosaics, and a warren of narrow passages connect courtyards and royal apartments. The triple-arched marble main entrance is where the maharanas (queens) of Udaipur were weighed and their weight in gold distributed to the populace. On the grand Suraj Gokhada (“Balcony of the Sun”), the Suryavanshi Maharanas of Mewar once stood to present themselves to the people. The Zenana Mahal, the women's quarters, are among the most spectacular spots in the palace. It is difficult for travelers in India to comprehend the traditions and rituals involved in everyday life. As in all travel situations, it is important to observe the local people carefully and use common sense. For example, ask permission before taking a photo, entering a temple, washing at a tap, or touching a baby. You'll almost always find the Indians friendly and helpful. A few guidelines are offered below.

Body Language: When seated, it is not polite to show the bottoms of the feet, and it is especially rude to point them in someone else's direction. Therefore you should not stretch your legs out or cross them with the sole turned up or out. Also, never step over or on any part of a person as this exposes them to the bottom of your feet. The purity of the body is viewed as being the highest at the head, becoming progressively dirtier down to the feet. This also makes patting children or other people on the head ill-mannered. Touching a person of the opposite sex, even on the shoulder or hand, can easily be misinterpreted and it's best to refrain from doing so.

Clothing: Be modest in the way you dress while visiting India. (See Notes on Clothing in this booklet.) Women should wear skirts falling at least to the knee, or pants. Bathing suits, halter tops, and tank tops are considered an unseemly display in India and will embarrass local people. Especially in and around temples, wear long pants or a skirt, and a top that covers the shoulders and upper arms. Men may wear shorts up to mid-thigh, but no shorter. It is permitted for men to rest and sunbathe without a shirt, but it is considered extremely rude for men to walk about bare-chested.

Water: Spring water is considered sacred and is protected by ritual. River and stream water is not subject to these taboos. Many villages have only small springs from which to draw their water. Do not casually take water from these springs. It is best to receive permission from a local person. If there is no one nearby, then follow these guidelines: Use only a very clean utensil to draw water. Do not drink directly from this utensil or from the spring. Do not brush your teeth or wash anything near the spring. Carry water 20 feet or more away from the spring before washing. If the water source becomes polluted by careless practice, the consequences for the village are disastrous.

Shrines: Along almost every street and trail you will find temples and shrines of all sorts. Regardless of their size, they are revered with great devotion. When entering a temple, ask about or observe local practice. In some temples, shoes must be removed. In some, it is forbidden to wear leather of any kind (such as a leather belt) or to eat.

Begging: Begging is a tradition in India and can be difficult for westerners to confront. There are no easy answers as to whether to give small amounts of money to beggars. It is ultimately up to each of you to decide. Children along popular travel routes often ask for candy, pens, or money. Rewarding this behavior sets up a barrage of requests for more, a dependency on products not locally available, and in the case of sweets, an increasing dental problem. We, therefore, ask that you do not give anything to children: no candy, pens, balloons, or money. If you like, you can bring pens, crayons, large felt-tip pens, paper, maps, or postcards to donate to schools we pass along the way.

Homes: Indians are very hospitable and it is common for them to invite travelers into their homes. If your hosts take off their shoes before entering a household or room, do likewise. Inside, cooking and eating areas should be treated with special respect. Avoid going into the hearth unless specifically invited there; it is sacred, and home to a guardian spirit. Do not touch the fire area or dry your shoes by it, and do not point your feet at or burn trash in the fire. Do not touch food or eating utensils used by local people. Also, many Hindus cannot eat food that has been touched by a foreigner, so don't offer anything from your plate.

Air tickets (or E-tickets)

Visa for India

Passport

One other picture ID, such as a driver's license

Expense money

Please remember to pack your batteries, liquids, pocket knife, or other sharp objects in your checked luggage.

Standard hard or soft-sided suitcase, with a small padlock (must be unlocked for air travel in the US). For higher quality images and the ability to use long lenses for closer wildlife pictures, a DSLR camera is well worthwhile, though heavier. Most digital cameras and phones have good video options, but you may want to consider a GoPro for a lightweight, waterproof option. Always practice ahead of time with new equipment and bring your manual with you. You may want to consider renting camera equipment for your trip from places such as borrowlenses.com. This is an especially good idea for renting large zoom lenses that you may need for just one trip. Adding their extra insurance fee to cover expensive equipment is recommended.

Camera Accessories
We recommend bringing at least two large capacity memory cards or a small digital storage unit (or tablet) to back up your photos, freeing space on your memory cards. Don't forget to bring a battery charger and a backup battery so one is always charged and ready to use. For trips where you may be away from power sources for multiple days, consider looking into a solar-powered battery charger or buying additional backup batteries, and check that you have the appropriate adapter for the electrical outlets in your destination.

Sharing Your Images
We would love for you to share photos from your trip, and with your permission, may even use your photos in our marketing materials or on our photo blog. We request that you send us a small sample of your best images. Please email your photos to wtphotoblog@gmail.com or tag us @WildernessTravel on social media.

Photography Etiquette
When taking pictures of local people, be aware of cultural considerations. Approaching people with a warm smile and using polite gestures or simple phrases to ask permission to photograph them usually works well. It is always recommended to engage people in conversation before asking to photograph them, but if people do not wish to have their photo taken, please honor their requests. We urge travelers to avoid giving money in exchange for photo opportunities, which makes it harder for future travelers to have a meaningful personal interaction with local people. Please always heed your Trip Leader's guidelines for what is appropriate.
