In Rabat, the capital, we stroll the 12th century Oudaya Kasbah, then travel inland through olive groves to visit the hill town of Moulay Idriss and the evocative Roman ruins of Volubilis, a World Heritage Site.
The most authentic of Morocco's imperial capitals, Fes is nestled in a high valley and resplendent with soaring minarets and dazzling domes. From our traditional riad in a historic quarter of the medina, we walk through a twisting network of souks, open-air cafes, and courtyards.
Crossing the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, we descend into the stunning canyon of the Ziz Gorge as we make our way to our private Sahara luxury camp. Our activities here are flexible—explore on foot or ride camels. We'll feel as if we have the Sahara to ourselves as we stargaze under a brilliant sky.
In the High Atlas, we take a walk in the impressive Todra Gorge, whose steep walls are over 1,300 feet high, and visit a traditional village amid the red-rock spires of the Dades Gorge.
We explore stunning Ait Ben Haddou, an 11th century mud-brick citadel often used as a film location. In Marrakesh, the famed medina and the central square—a scene of snake charmers, fire eaters, and fortune tellers—will lure us in.
Whitewashed houses with blue shutters give this walled town a Mediterranean atmosphere. We explore the tiny port, the bustling fish market, and the harbor, where bright blue boats lie at anchor.
Visit the enchanting Majorelle Garden, a diverse botanical landscape restored by Yves Saint Laurent, and depart on Day 14.
Our 2025 itinerary is 12 days, 2 days shorter than 2024. Please call for details.

      Review Trip Level Details
Morocco has climatic variations but the weather is largely moderate, with a cooling influence from the Mediterranean and Atlantic.. In the summer months, daytime temperatures are in the 90s in the valleys, but cool down to the 70s as we gain elevation. Highs in the coastal cities are in the high 70s and low 80s. In the spring, average daytime temperatures in coastal cities range from the mid-60s to the low 80s. The Dades Valley is in vibrant bloom in early spring, from late February through March, and has cooler average highs in the 40s, dropping to lows in the 30s at night. In the north, light rains may stretch to mid-March. During the fall months, Morocco's weather is mild and dry—highs range from the 60s to the high 80s. In the north, light rains begin in November.
We enjoy first-class hotels and high-end riads in the cities and smaller, quainter lodges in the more remote areas. We spend two nights at a private Sahara desert camp while on the camel trek, where we provide all the comforts you would want in a luxury tented camp. Canvas interiors are hung with bright fabrics and carpeted with Moroccan rugs. Comfortable beds are covered by cozy duvets. You'll have a washstand, shower, and toilet within your tent, separated from the sleeping room by traditional white curtains. Meals are served in a large dining tent with a comfortable lounging area outside.
Meals will be a mix of à la carte and family style at local restaurants, cafés and hotels. Tajine (a slow-cooked meat stew often made with chicken, seafood, vegetables, olives, prunes, or almonds) is an important staple of Moroccan cuisine, as is couscous, kebab, and harira, a rich, spiced bean soup. We will also be eating dishes with a more French influence as well as seafood.
The majority of your transportation is provided in a comfortable air-conditioned minibus. On some of the smaller, more remote roads where larger vehicles cannot easily access, we use Toyota 4WD Land Cruisers. Filtered water is carried on board our vehicles at all times for your use.
In the Sahara, we enjoy two days of exploring the desert landscape via camel. On the first day, we drive into the desert to meet our camels and Tuareg cameleers. You can walk or ride camels, or you can opt to ride to camp by 4WD vehicle. The next day, several options are available—you can explore a small mountain called M'ifis and the dunes of Erg Znagui by camel, enjoy a walk, or simply stay in camp and enjoy the surroundings. The desert walking is not difficult but covers a variety of terrain with no trails, from hard-packed desert to vast sand dunes. Our camels are roped together in groups of three or four and led by a cameleer. Most people alternately ride and walk, as camel riding for long periods can be uncomfortable. You can walk if you don't want to ride a camel at all, or relax in the camp instead.

Please note: Camels can be unpredictable animals. It is possible for the camel to stumble on rough terrain or make a sudden erratic movement. Since camels cannot be saddled as securely as horses, the possibility of a fall is increased. It's important to follow the instruction and guidance of your Trip Leader, and to stay alert while riding. Anyone participating in this optional activity must acknowledge the inherent risks in riding and perhaps falling from the saddle, and agree to accept responsibility.

      Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

      Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

      Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

      Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

      Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

We suggest that you bring an ample supply of US cash (USD) with you. You can change money at hotels, banks, exchange bureaus, and even at some shops in Marrakech and Fes. The exchange rate is fixed by the government, so you will get the same rate wherever you change money. Money can be changed at the Fes hotel, but not again until Marrakesh. Hotel cashiers have limited hours: usually from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and again from 3:00 to 6:00 pm, so try to coordinate around these hours. For larger purchases, credit cards can be used in the main cities but not in smaller towns.

You will need to budget spending money for gratuities, any meals not included in the trip itinerary, and personal items such as beverages, phone calls, etc. Depending on how much shopping you like to do, we recommend you bring about $500 in cash and one or two major credit cards (Visa or MasterCard). Most purchases over $50 can be charged on your credit card, although you will need cash for shopping in the city souks. Souk merchants prefer dirham, as converting from US dollars (USD) to dirham can be confusing (and you may not get the best conversion rate). So, please make sure to have dirham with you if you plan to shop at the souks. There are ATMs in the larger cities, where you can pull out money. To use an ATM internationally, you must have a four-digit PIN. If you plan to use your credit cards, inform your credit card company before your departure that you will be using the card abroad.
Tipping is completely discretionary, but over the years, clients have asked us for tipping guidelines to reward guides for outstanding service. You will find French bread, croissants, and steak widely available in restaurants. More traditional dishes are a rich, spicy bean soup called harira, as well as meat kebabs, tajine (a slow-cooked meat stew often made with chicken, seafood, vegetables, olives, prunes, or almonds), and pastilla, a poultry pie made with filo pastry and cinnamon. And of course, there is couscous, a staple based on steamed semolina. For dessert in restaurants, you may find crème caramel and almond-filled pastries. Local yogurts are delicious, and seasonal fruits are abundant. The national drink is thé à la menthe—green tea flavored with fresh mint and sweetened with sugar. French-style coffee is widely available, as are bottled water and soft drinks. The drinking of alcohol takes a low profile in Morocco, but beer and wine are available in restaurants and at hotel bars. Moroccan wines include a light French-style claret, a strong cabernet, and a dry white. The local beers are Casablanca or Flag. For higher quality images and the ability to use long lenses for closer wildlife pictures, a DSLR camera is well worthwhile, though heavier. Most digital cameras and phones have good video options, but you may want to consider a GoPro for a lightweight, waterproof option. Always practice ahead of time with new equipment and bring your manual with you. You may want to consider renting camera equipment for your trip from places such as borrowlenses.com. This is an especially good idea for renting large zoom lenses that you may need for just one trip. Adding their extra insurance fee to cover expensive equipment is recommended.

Camera Accessories
We recommend bringing at least two large capacity memory cards or a small digital storage unit (or tablet) to back up your photos, freeing space on your memory cards. Don't forget to bring a battery charger and a backup battery so one is always charged and ready to use. For trips where you may be away from power sources for multiple days, consider looking into a solar-powered battery charger or buying additional backup batteries, and check that you have the appropriate adapter for the electrical outlets in your destination.

Sharing Your Images
We would love for you to share photos from your trip, and with your permission, may even use your photos in our marketing materials or on our photo blog. We request that you send us a small sample of your best images. Please email your photos to wtphotoblog@gmail.com or tag us @WildernessTravel on social media.

Photography Etiquette
When taking pictures of local people, be aware of cultural considerations. Approaching people with a warm smile and using polite gestures or simple phrases to ask permission to photograph them usually works well. It is always recommended to engage people in conversation before asking to photograph them, but if people do not wish to have their photo taken, please honor their requests. We urge travelers to avoid giving money in exchange for photo opportunities, which makes it harder for future travelers to have a meaningful personal interaction with local people. Please always heed your Trip Leader's guidelines for what is appropriate.
